The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is to build a more peaceful
world. In the world today, there are many things that can
lead a person down the wrong path in life. Traditional Chang
Hun Tae Kwon Do not only develops a person physically, but
mentally as well. It helps lead a person down the right
path.
I became a
certified International TaeKwon-Do Association
instructor in December of 1991, and have been
teaching ever since. Many people who know I am an instructor
ask me how much I get paid to teach. I tell them, nothing.
They are surprised. They don't understand, the giving back
concept. They don't understand why we do what we do. We
teach our students "the way" so that there will be more good
people in the world. it is not easy to get a student to
reach the Black Belt level.
In our style, most don't make
it. The ones that do join a very special group. The Black
Belt Family. We, the Udancha of the KMAI are just as happy
to get a student to the Black Belt level as the student is to
get there. Even those who don't make it to the Black Belt
level have taken something with them when they leave.
This
past year we had a young man in our school, Mr. Michael Dale.
He was beginning to stray down the wrong path getting into
some trouble. His father was very concerned and enrolled his
son at the KMAI. Over the next year and a half Mr. Dale
turned his life around. He made many friends among the
students of the KMAI. Mr. Dale recently reached the rank of
a 3rd gup, joined the Marines, bought a house, and got
married.
Many of the instructors at the KMAI, along with
Grand Master Benko attended the wedding. At the reception,
Mr. Dale's father came up to me, his eyes were tearing up.
He said to me,
"I thank you for this. You helped do this.
You, the instructors, and the school turned my son around.
Thank you!"
This father was so happy, so grateful for what
we did to help his son.
I went back to my table and told my
fiance, Ruth Anderson, what Mr. Dale's father had said to me.
I told her that "this is the reason we do this" Mr. Dale and
his wife, Laura, are presently living in North Carolina where
he is stationed.
