Wee Tae Kwon Do Camp 2000
by Master Angela McDowell
Covered in sunscreen on a very hot June 8, 2000 day, the
youngest KMAI martial artists began the second annual Wee
Tae Kwon Do camp. Participants included both members and non-members
of the KMAI.
The camp started with relay races of camel walk,
froggies, cartwheels, and running. These miniscule martial artists worked
on refining their basic actions of blocks and strikes through a number
marching patterns while being sprayed with the hose at the same time.

Defying gravity the Wee students rolled uphill as well as down.
Mrs. Whitman prepared a delicious lunch, which was eaten during a short
break. The afternoon continued with Jang Bong (long staff) training. The
campers were challenged to do thrusts through hanging rings, and to do side
strikes at targets (Nerf balls).
As instructors Greg McDowell and Joe McDowell blew bubbles, the group used front kick, punch,
in suto (knife-hand), and out suto to burst the targets.

Rising block, outer forearm block, and inward block were all practiced
and executed, as instructors came down the line for a game of "Block the
Blockers." The children practiced their target throwing skills when they
tried to toss the beanbag stars into the troll's mouth. The four-hour Wee
camp was greatly enjoyed by all of the participants.
