Gen. Choi Hong Hi, Father of Tae Kwon Do, Passes Away
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA -
It is with great pain and sorrow that we announce that General
Choi Hong Hi  ,
founder and president of the International TaeKwon-Do Federation,
passed away at 8:35 pm on June 15, 2002, in Pyongyang, North Korea.
The General was 83 at the time of his death.
General Choi was born in 1918, in Kilju, North Korea.
He was laid to rest on June 17, 2002 in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Because General Choi was a Buddhist, a traditional memorial service
took place in Pyongyang 100 days after his passing.

On April 11, 1955 a special board of master instructors, historians, and
other important members of Korean society held a meeting. Their purpose
was to coordinate the different kwans (schools) and select a name for the
newly organized Korean style. After reviewing several
different names for the new style, they chose the name submitted by
General Choi Hong Hi, the new name was TaeKwon-Do. General Choi is
recognized throughout the world as the "Father of TaeKwon-Do."

General Choi is survived by his wife, son, Choi Jung Hwa,
two daughters, and his grandchildren, who all live in Canada.
A ceremony of remembrance celebrating the life and achievements
of the Founder of Taekwon-Do General Choi Hong Hi was held in the
gardens at 33 Leone Lane, Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Saturday,
August 17, 2002
With the breakup and fragmentation of the ITF (International TaeKwon-Do
Federation), we invite ITF members to join the ITA (International
TaeKwon-Do Association) and keep the Art of Chang-Hun TaeKwon-Do pure and free
from politics, as it was meant to be.
